Charles Cobb came to Boulder in 1887 at the age of 25. He owned a freighting business called C.F. Cobb's Rocky Mountain Freight Teams, and hauled supplies up to the mining camps from Boulder, and ore from the mines to the mills. James M. Bateman was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales, on 10 July 1830, and died in Boulder, Colorado, on 6 October 1898. He came to Colorado in 1860, and moved to Boulder in 1861. He owned land on the Farmer's Ditch in Boulder; his farm was valued at $7,000 in the 1885 census. In 1890, he sold his farm for $9,500, and lived in Boulder from 1891 until his death in 1898. Smith was sent to Colorado in 1864 by the Noble Gold Mining Company, a group of Boston investors, to examine and report on certain mining properties in and around Central City. There he became editor of the Miner's Register, a journal on mineral resources in Colorado.
